I love words and always wanted to write fiction. My father taught me to read before I went to school. On my first day, a seriously impressed headmistress led me by the hand from classroom to classroom where I had to read out loud to all the other kids. Great way to make friends. Not.
But a sign of things to come...
After starting my career in journalism as a newspaper reporter, I joined BRMB commercial radio in Birmingham as a newsreader. I then moved to BBC TV News and Current Affairs at Pebble Mill as a broadcast journalist.
I guess I enjoyed it – I stayed almost twenty years in various posts including reporter, presenter and producer. I worked in London briefly in the early eighties as a presenter on Newsnight. (And, no, I can’t believe I looked like that, either!)
Back in the Midlands, I became one of the BBC’s first women assistant editors.
But I hit a certain age, wanted to see my young daughter grow up and was passionately eager to write a crime novel.
It took eight years, four unpublished books and a string of rave rejections before realising the dream.
During this period, I did – and still do – freelance journalism, mainly articles and interviews for magazines. I’ve had several short stories published. Indeed, one early story won a prize, a murder mystery weekend. Despite being on a team with a lawyer and a customs officer – I failed totally to spot the ‘killer’. Still, I got an article out of it!
As well as writing, I also do occasional voice-over work. It’s that reading aloud thing again!
But writing the Bev Morriss series is a full-time job and a great pleasure and privilege.
Bev’s latest adventure - Death Line - is due out in July this year. I’m thrilled with
it and hope you will be as well.
